I was never pressured into getting my current job, or even following engineering at all really. In fact, when I was much younger my step-dad thought I should work in London as a banker – but I would have found that boring!
Since I was very young I’ve been fascinated with space. My favourite subjects at school were Maths and Science. And when thinking about careers, I wanted to do something which would affect and help lots of people. So to answer your questions, I’d say it was those interests which pushed me on to where I am today.

I think family and friends are often concerned about us gaining ‘good’ jobs in today’s world but when you start work you will soon know if you love or hate it. I wonder sometimes what it would have been like to do something totally different but on balance I am glad I made the choice to work as an engineer in the nuclear industry – there’s always something exciting to learn!
